Missing theatre? Broadway Boxed Up is here to help.

Designed to remedy the hole the Broadway shutdown has left during the COVID-19 pandemic and creating a platform to elevate voices in the theatre community, Broadway Boxed Up is a monthly subscription box service curated for the theatre lover.

Each box is filled with a variety of Broadway-themed goods, including exclusive show merchandise, props and programs, access to exclusive talkbacks, and virtual events and articles featuring the industry and professionals. The team at Broadway Boxed Up also designs so of their own items and collaborates with other Broadway-themed small businesses and theatre-professional merchants to provide variety in each box. It’s all the joy of theatre wrapped up in a box, and delivered straight to your doorstep.

“We are the first and longest-running Broadway-themed subscription box,” said Anant Das, founder of Broadway Boxed Up.

Das was living and working in Manhattan prior to the COVID shut down, producing cabaret-style shows and theatrical productions that elevated the voices of underrepresented communities on stage. Stepping into theatre after growing up with Bollywood films, Das quickly realized there was a lack of representation of not only South Asian communities, but many other communities in theatre, and has made it a goal to create opportunities to elevate voices in the theatre community.

In May 2020, the idea hit: a Broadway subscription box that would bring a bit of Broadway to fans and elevate voices in the theatre community—and Broadway Boxed Up was born.

Broadway Boxed Up launched in September 2020, establishing their mission to bring theatre closer to fans, while elevating voices in the theatre community, including those of BIPOC, Deaf, and other professionals and organizations. Every box includes materials hand-picked to elevate these voices to the theatre community.

“Each month we try to have a variety of items, featuring popular, more recent productions, as well as older shows,” Das said. “Education is a big part of our box as well, so we want to expose our subscribers to new shows, maybe vintage Broadway programs, teach them about the theatre world, while still having some more familiar shows too.”

While being conscious of creating a product that educates and entertains, Broadway Boxed Up is also conscious of their environmental impact. The team strives to create boxes in a way that is as sustainable as possible, and makes donations to both the organizations they feature and organizations that support the theatre community.

“It’s important as consumers of theatre to also be educated on the issues surrounding equity and racism and representation and accessibility in the industry.” Das said. “I hope everyone is able to continue to learn, whether through Broadway Boxed Up, or any of the other organizations and resources out there.”

As Broadway Boxed Up looks forward to what’s next, the team has exciting plans coming to theatre fans in upcoming months, including more talkbacks, virtual classes, launching a blog to feature the articles found in their boxes, and partnering with small businesses and creators to share items made by theatre professionals and Broadway-related groups.

In addition to collaborating with the theatre community, Broadway Boxed Up is hopeful to collaborate with the theatres to continue their mission of bringing a piece of Broadway to fans when theatres do reopen.

After creating a new service during some of the most challenging months for the theatre community, Das shared a few words of advice, “Definitely don’t be afraid to try something new. Take a leap—you may just be surprised where you land.”
